How to use the random name picker
Type or paste your list into the box: names of students, raffle entries, team members, restaurants, chores or anything else. Each line is one entry (a single line separated by commas also works). Press Spin the wheel and the pointer at the top lands on the winner. Tick Remove the winner after each spin to draw the next prize, choose who presents next, or work through a list until everyone has had a turn.
For a giveaway with several prizes, set Winners and press Pick winners to draw them all at once in order (first, second, third…). For classrooms, sports and work groups, Make teams deals everyone into random, evenly sized teams, and Shuffle list gives a random order for presentations, turns or a running order.
Fair and private
The winner is chosen with a cryptographic random generator, with no favourites and no pattern, before the animation starts, so how hard or when you press doesn’t matter. Everything runs in your browser. Your list is never uploaded; it’s only kept on this device so it’s there when you come back.
Need numbers instead of names, a coin flip or dice? Use the random number generator. Developers and AI agents can use GET /api/pick?items=Ann,Ben,Cara&count=1 or the pick_random tool on our MCP server.
Frequently asked questions
Is the random name picker fair?
Yes. Every entry has exactly the same chance. The winner is chosen with your browser’s cryptographic random generator (the same kind used for passwords) before the wheel starts turning; the spin is just the show. Nothing is weighted unless you add a name more than once.
How do I give someone more chances?
Add their name more than once. A name that appears three times on the list has three slices on the wheel and three times the chance of winning. Tick “Remove duplicates” if you want everyone to have exactly one chance.
Can I pick more than one winner?
Yes. Set how many winners you need and press Pick winners. Winners are always different entries, so nobody is picked twice (unless their name is on the list twice).
How do I split a class or group into random teams?
Paste the names, choose the number of teams and press Make teams. Everyone is shuffled and dealt into teams like cards, so team sizes never differ by more than one.
Is my list saved or sent anywhere?
Your list stays on your device. It is kept in your browser’s local storage so it is still there next time, and it is never uploaded. Press Clear to remove it.
