How AI pricing works, in plain English
When a business or developer uses an AI like ChatGPT through its API, they pay for the text going in (your question or document) and the text coming out (the AI’s answer). Both are counted in tokens. Answers cost more than questions, usually 4–6 times more per token, so a long reply costs more than a long prompt.
As a rule of thumb, a one-page email (about 300 words, 400 tokens) costs well under one US cent to send to any of these models. Costs only add up when you send thousands of messages a day, which is why we show the “1,000 times” column.

What is a token?
A token is a small chunk of text that AI models read and charge for. In English, one token is about 4 characters or ¾ of a word, so 100 words is roughly 130 tokens. Other languages and code often use more tokens per word.
How accurate is this calculator?
The token count is an estimate (usually within about 10–15% for normal English). Each company uses its own tokenizer, and Anthropic says its newest Claude models count about 30% more tokens for the same text, which we include. Prices come from the official pricing pages and are dated on this page.
Does ChatGPT Plus cost per token?
No. The ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini apps charge a flat monthly fee. Per-token prices apply to the developer API, which businesses use to build AI into their own products. This tool shows API prices.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. Counting and pricing happen in your browser. Your text never leaves your device.
What does “Will it fit?” mean?
Every model can only read a certain amount at once, called its context window. If your text is longer, the AI can’t read it all in one go and you need to split it into parts.
