How to find who owns a domain

Type the domain into the FernTool WHOIS lookup. It shows the registrar (the company it was bought through), the dates it was registered and expires, its status and name servers, and the owner’s details when they are public. Since privacy rules such as GDPR and POPIA, most personal owners are hidden, but there are still ways to reach them.

What a WHOIS lookup tells you

Registrar
Where the domain is managed, e.g. a hosting company or registrar.
Created / expires
How old the domain is (a 3-day-old “bank” site is a red flag) and when it’s due for renewal.
Status
Codes such as clientTransferProhibited (locked, normal) or redemptionPeriod (expired, may soon be free).
Name servers
Which DNS host serves it, a strong hint about the hosting provider.
Registrant
The owner’s name or organisation, if it isn’t redacted.

If the owner is hidden (“REDACTED FOR PRIVACY”)

  1. Use the registrar’s contact form. Most registrars offer a relay form or an anonymised email address that forwards to the owner.
  2. Check the website itself: the contact or about page, the footer, or the site’s privacy policy, which must name who runs it.
  3. Look at the DNS records. The DNS lookup shows the MX (email) and TXT records, which reveal the email and hosting providers used.
  4. For .co.za domains, the ZA Central Registry (ZACR) runs WHOIS for .co.za, and the WHOIS lookup shows what it publishes.
  5. For legal matters (trademark, fraud, phishing), registrars disclose owner data to lawyers and police on request, and you can report abuse to the registrar directly.

Who hosts a website (not who owns it)?

Look up the domain’s A record in the DNS lookup to get its IP address, then put that IP into the IP lookup: the network owner is the hosting company or CDN (Cloudflare, Amazon, Hetzner, Afrihost and so on). For more on tracing an address, see how to find who owns an IP address.

Want a domain that’s taken?

Check the expiry date. If it’s about to lapse, watch it: after expiry most domains go through a grace and redemption period (roughly 30 to 75 days in total for .com) before being released. Otherwise contact the owner via the registrar’s form or the website, or use your registrar’s brokerage service. Be wary of anyone asking for money up front to “unlock” a domain.

Frequently asked questions

Is WHOIS lookup free?

Yes. WHOIS and its modern replacement, RDAP, are public services. FernTool queries the official registries directly and is free with no sign-up.

Why can’t I see the domain owner?

Privacy laws such as GDPR and POPIA mean registrars hide personal owner details by default. Use the registrar’s contact form or the website’s own contact details instead.

How do I find out when a domain expires?

A WHOIS lookup shows the expiry date. If it has passed, the status will show a grace, redemption or pending-delete period.

How can I tell where a website is hosted?

Find the domain’s IP with a DNS lookup, then run an IP lookup on it. The network owner is the host or CDN.
