How to find your router’s IP address

Your router’s IP address, also called the default gateway, is the address you type into a browser to open its settings page. It is a private address such as 192.168.1.1. It is not your public IP (that one is on the FernTool homepage).

Windows

Open Command Prompt and run ipconfig. Look for Default Gateway under your active adapter.

Mac

System Settings → Network → Wi‑Fi → Details → TCP/IP and look for Router. In Terminal: route -n get default | grep gateway.

iPhone and iPad

Settings → Wi‑Fi, then tap ⓘ next to your network. The address is listed under Router.

Android

Settings → Network & internet → Internet, then tap the gear next to your Wi‑Fi. It may be shown as Gateway or Router, sometimes under Advanced or View more.

Linux

ip route | grep default

Common default addresses

The login password is often printed on a sticker on the router. If you changed it and forgot it, a factory reset (holding the reset pin for about 10 seconds) restores the defaults, but it also wipes your Wi‑Fi name and password.

What you can do there

Want to check which addresses sit in your home network? Paste your gateway with its prefix (for example 192.168.1.0/24) into the subnet calculator.

Frequently asked questions

What is my router IP address?

It is your default gateway. On Windows run ipconfig and read Default Gateway. On a phone, open the Wi-Fi network details and look for Router or Gateway.

Is 192.168.1.1 my public IP?

No. 192.168.x.x addresses are private and only work inside your home network. Your public IP is shown on ferntool.com.

I cannot open my router page, what now?

Make sure you are connected to that router’s Wi-Fi or cable, use http:// rather than https://, try the gateway address shown by ipconfig, and turn off any VPN.
