Telkom IP address & ASN guide

Telkom is South Africa’s incumbent telecoms company. Its main network, AS37457, is by far the largest in the country by number of announced IPv4 prefixes, carrying Telkom fibre and DSL customers and much of Telkom Mobile’s traffic. Openserve, Telkom’s wholesale fibre and copper arm, is part of the same group.

CGNAT on Telkom

Telkom Mobile and LTE customers are typically behind CGNAT. Telkom fibre customers often receive a public IPv4 address on the router, but it is usually dynamic and can change after a reconnect. If your router’s WAN address starts with 100.64–100.127 you are behind CGNAT.

To check: compare your router’s WAN address with the IP on FernTool. If they differ, or the WAN IP is in 100.64.0.0/10, you are behind CGNAT. More on CGNAT.

How do I find my Telkom IP address?

Open www.ferntool.com on a device connected through Telkom. The page shows your public IP, the network that owns it and its ASN. For your private IP, check your device’s Wi-Fi settings.

Why does my Telkom IP show a different city?

IP geolocation is approximate. South African networks often register address blocks to a head office or a large city, so the city shown may not be where you are. The country and network are much more reliable.
