MTN IP address & ASN guide
MTN South Africa runs the country’s second-largest mobile network. Traffic from MTN SIM cards, MTN 5G and fixed-LTE routers, and MTN Business services is announced from MTN’s autonomous systems AS16637 and AS12091, so a lookup of your IP will usually name “MTN SA”.
What your IP says
- Your IP
- 216.73.217.116
- Network
- Anthropic, PBC (AS16509)
You don’t appear to be on MTN right now — your IP belongs to Anthropic, PBC.
MTN ASNs and IP ranges
- AS16637
- MTN SA · 299 IPv4 / 5 IPv6 prefixes originated
- AS12091
- MTN SA · 131 IPv4 / 0 IPv6 prefixes originated
An ASN (autonomous system number) identifies a network on the internet. Any IP address announced by these ASNs belongs to MTN. Paste an address into the IP lookup to see which ASN it falls under.
CGNAT on MTN
MTN mobile data uses carrier-grade NAT, so your public IPv4 address is shared with other subscribers and changes often — sometimes every time you reconnect. Inbound connections (port forwarding, CCTV remote access, self-hosted servers) generally will not work on a consumer APN. Business products with a fixed public IP are the usual fix.
To check: compare your router’s WAN address with the IP on FernTool. If they differ, or the WAN IP is in 100.64.0.0/10, you are behind CGNAT. More on CGNAT.
How to find your IP on MTN
- Public IP: open ferntool.com or run
curl https://www.ferntool.com. - Private IP and router address: see how to find your IP on Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android.
- IPv6: run the IPv6 test.
Good to know
MTN’s IP ranges are registered nationally, so IP-based location often shows Johannesburg or another major city even if you are elsewhere.
Frequently asked questions
What is MTN’s ASN?
MTN announces its IP addresses from AS16637, AS12091, with AS16637 the largest by IPv4 prefixes (bgp.he.net, 16 October 2026).
Does MTN use CGNAT?
MTN mobile data uses carrier-grade NAT, so your public IPv4 address is shared with other subscribers and changes often — sometimes every time you reconnect. Inbound connections (port forwarding, CCTV remote access, self-hosted servers) generally will not work on a consumer APN. Business products with a fixed public IP are the usual fix.
How do I find my MTN IP address?
Open www.ferntool.com on a device connected through MTN. The page shows your public IP, the network that owns it and its ASN. For your private IP, check your device’s Wi-Fi settings.
Why does my MTN IP show a different city?
IP geolocation is approximate. South African networks often register address blocks to a head office or a large city, so the city shown may not be where you are. The country and network are much more reliable.
